"What becomes apparent is that we cannot retrieve information or knowledge that has not gone into our memory."
"Good design for learning matches the materials with the affordances of the technologies to best position the learner for learning."
The emotional continuum - On one side bored, apathetic and on the other side interested and engaged.
Three things that influence people's ability to learn, prior knowledge, context and expectations.
Simple visuals are usually the most effective.
"There is little so far to prove the validity of the impact of learning styles on actual learning."
Why this is significant to my thinking about where to go next: While reading Baggio I am constantly reminded that learning has so much to do with prior knowledge, interest, and emotion. It makes me realize how important it is to get to know our students and for us to help them design their learning. I hope blogging can be an insight into their interest, expectations, prior knowledge, etc.
Clark:
ISD(Instructional Systems Design) is a “systematic process for planning, designing, and building” training materials.”
ADDIE = Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
Four “ingredients’ of instruction: content, learning outcomes, instructional methods, delivery media.
Structure for a technical lesson: Introduction, knowledge needed, major tasks.
Content Performance matrix: Facts, concepts, processes, procedures, principles. Can be processed at two level: remember and apply
Text layout is important: chunk related info, headings and labels, use of tables, use of white space
Why this is significant to my thinking about where to go next: I am looking forward to hearing how others plan to use this. I am not yet sure how I will apply this. One of my biggest takeaways is the importance of text layout. I wonder how I can teach students about how they can design their blogs to incorporate these ideas.
Dervin:
Bridging the gap between the user and the information.
We have communication problems. We need to ask the right questions.
Sense making methods: surveys.
Why this is significant to my thinking about where to go next: Again, something that stands out to me is that we need to know our students. We also need to use tools such as the sense making surveys as a way of doing this. We need to make sure we are asking the right questions that allow us to design instruction that will help bridge the gap between the students and the information. I could use some of these survey questions as blog prompts.
2. My Driving Questions:
In the context of a math classroom, how can blogging support students in setting and tracking their content and skill goals?
3. My Need to Knows:
How do students feel about blogging?
What are effective ways to have an authentic audience for blogs?
How often should students blog?
what blogging norms should be set before blogging?
How should students interact with their blog and others once it is posted?
Key Ideas From Dervin and Baggio
This week we looked at Brenda Dervin's Sense Making article and chapters 1 and 2 of The Visual Connection by Baggio. Here are my notes along with my 4 Key Ideas.
